What is it that's really close to Godliness?

The old saying is "Cleanliness is next to Godliness." I think Brendan McBride, the author of the wonderful Off the Beaten Path, has found the real concept close to God's heart: Laughter.

It comes from the ritual cleansing the Temple priests underwent before entering the holy of holies.

We, however, have been "washed clean" by the blood of the Lamb, and the Holy of Holies opened to all.

In contrast, Jesus spent most of his time with beggars and lepers, walking dusty road in sandals. I doubt he was often "clean," but there's no doubt about how close he was to "godliness."

I always remember Gallagher (the cerebral/slapstick comedian for you young'ens) saying that he looked it up and Goggles is next to Godliness.

Cleanliness is next to Claustrophobia and Cleavage.
